ATL August News - Le Mans 24hr & Formula Student

Aero Tec Laboratories News - August 2014

Le Mans 24hr & Formula Student

The summer months have historically offered a quieter period for Aero Tec Laboratories, but in 2014 there has been no time to step off the accelerator pedal!

Recently ATL staff were on hand at the Le Mans 24hrs. Over 50 of the race entries were fitted with ATL fuel cells, and every single competitor utilised some of ATL's specialist equipment during the event.

Aero Tec laboratories are also a proud sponsor of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) 2014 Formula Student event, once again held at Silverstone during July. Three members of ATL's Senior Management team took part in the competition during their educational years, as have many of ATL's customers. The event is a breeding ground for future talent and worthy of support from industry. ATL were present with a display that included many products, including those fitted to the Triple Eight Engineering MG BTCC car, and Richardson Racing's EcoBoost Formula Ford.

Le Mans 24hrs

After 24 thrilling hours of racing Audi secured a hard earned victory in what was a dramatic race, with all seven factory cars suffering issues that required attention in the garage. Impressively, Porsche kept their LMP1 newcomer in contention for overall victory until the last few hours of the race.

LMP2 victory was claimed by JOTA Sport. A relentless drive saw the team and their Zytek-Nissan overcome stiff competition, with super-sub Oliver Turvey joining the team at the eleventh hour following Marc Gene's promotion to the works Audi team.

In GTE Pro it was the AF Corse Ferrari 458 of Bruni, Vilander and ex-F1 driver Fisichella who took victory, and in GTE Am Aston Martin took a popular win with Poulsen, Hansson and Thiim in their Vantage.

Formula Student 2014

The 2014 Formula Student competition, once again sponsored by Aero Tec Laboratories, took place from 10-13 July at the home of British motorsport, Silverstone. The competition boasted its usual international appeal, with some magnificently designed and prepared machinery on show.

The event was won by TU Delft with their four wheel drive, lightweight electric vehicle sporting an eye-catching set of tyres designed by the students themselves.

There was an impressive showing by British Universities with Oxford Brookes finishing in 6th position overall after winning the Design event (a first for a British University), followed closely by the University Bath in 7th, Cardiff University in 9th and Brunel University in 11th.

ATL Seminar

As part of ATL’s commitment to the future generation of engineers, Giles Dawson - Managing Director, Alex Ng – Design and Engineering Manager, and James Gornall – Sales Manager, were on hand to give advice to the large number of attendees. Topics such as design principles and best practices were covered, as well as how to maximise career opportunities following graduation.

Craig Dawson Most Valuable Team Member Award

Congratulations to David Turton for winning the Craig Dawson Most Valuable Team Member Award. David, a Bath University student and competitor, won the award for which he was nominated by his own team members thanks to his unwavering commitment to their Formula Student campaign.

Awarded to the person who is deemed to have gone 'above & beyond' in their competitive efforts, it commemorates the life, personality and achievements of one time ATL staff member Craig Dawson who tragically lost his life to cancer in 2010 aged just 29.

Craig was a keen supporter of the Formula Student event as a successful competitor with Oxford Brookes University, and later Faculty Adviser, Volunteer, and Commentator.

All Talk!

Picking up where he left off in 2013, ATL Managing Director Giles Dawson was on hand for live event commentary. His dulcet tones could be heard alongside Sam Collins, Online Editor of Racecar Engineering throughout the dynamic events.

Happy Customers

Customers continue to enjoy ATL's equipment both inside and outside of Racing Cars. A pleasing change of scenery is the beachfront with Hawkers Jet Ski Racing Team. Fede Fuster and his team of racers are using ATL refuelling bottles and ‘Red Head’ quick-fill equipment to speed up their pit stops in endurance Jet Ski racing. Every member of the ATL team wishes you the best of luck!
